Large Blue Created Spinel Ring, 9 Carat Gold

Hallmarked London, 1976 – by G & T.J

A truly striking statement piece, this vintage ring features a large, 7.45ct round brilliant-cut blue created spinel, beautifully mounted in 9 carat gold. The gem is held securely by four double claws that rise gracefully from sculpted petals, the open gallery beneath revealing elegant swooping swags of gold — artistry characteristic of fine 1970s jewellery workmanship.

Spinel has long been celebrated for its brilliance and durability. With a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, it sits just below sapphire and ruby, both rated at 9, and offers greater resilience than stones such as quartz or topaz. Created spinel is chemically and structurally identical to its natural twin, exhibiting the same brilliance, colours, and enduring strength — its only difference lies in origin, born of science rather than stone. A gem ahead of its time: the refined, eco‑conscious choice before sustainability had a name.

Historically, spinel has held an esteemed place among the great gemstones. For centuries red spinels were mistaken for rubies — most famously in the case of the Black Prince’s "Ruby", which adorns the Imperial State Crown as part of the British Crown Jewels and is, in fact, a magnificent red spinel. This royal association secures the spinel’s rightful place amongst the world’s most important and storied gems.

This magnificent example, hallmarked with the crown and 375 for 9 carat gold, the leopard’s head for London, and the date letter ‘B’ for 1976, bears the maker’s mark G & T.J. It remains in excellent vintage condition, presenting a luminous blue hue that dances with the light.

The ring is size K and can be professionally resized for a perfect fit.

A vintage treasure that bridges regal tradition and modern craftsmanship — timeless, confident, eco-luxe, and utterly gloriously blue.
