A captivating Arts & Crafts sterling silver and enamel necklace, featuring a single-drop pendant by the esteemed Birmingham silversmith and jeweller James Fenton of Great Hampton Street. Fully hallmarked for Birmingham (anchor) in 1908 (letter "i"), this pendant bears the maker's mark "J.F." and exemplifies the nature-inspired elegance of the Art Nouveau era.
Design and Craftsmanship
The pendant depicts the delicate "honesty" plant (Lunaria annua), celebrated for its translucent, disc-shaped seed pods, rendered in a symmetrical sterling silver body with shaded blue and green glossy enamels that evoke cottage garden serenity. James Fenton's signature motif—a beautifully shaped blue enamel drop suspended gracefully—adorns this fine piece as a mark of authenticity. Works of James Fenton often retailed through high-end establishments because of their quality and the desirability of their organic motifs which were characteristic of Art Nouveau artistry.
The silver exhibits a wonderful antique patina, complemented by an unmarked chain of approximately 41 cm (42 cm with clasp) that shares the same patina and an exceptionally user-friendly clasp typical of the early 20th century period.
Condition and Dimensions
In excellent estate condition, the enamel on this item remains glossy and vibrant, with the pendant measuring about 5 cm in length and a simple silver bale for secure suspension. This 20th-century treasure blends sterling silver, enamel, and timeless botanical symbolism, perfect for collectors of British Arts & Crafts jewellery.
