An attractive and distinctly romantic hand-engraved rose gold band ring, dating perhaps to the final year of the Great War.

Crafted in a warm 11 carat rose gold, this piece is decorated throughout with finely hand-engraved foliate scrollwork, framed by delicate hand-cut millegrain edging to each border. The engraving remains crisp and lively, giving a particularly elegant appearance that belies its practical nature as a simple band.

To the interior is a charming period inscription, engraved by hand in flowing early twentieth century script:"29 Mai 18", almost certainly recording a significant date for its original owner. The use of the French spelling Mai raises the intriguing possibility of a French connection. On that date, France found itself in the midst of one of the most dramatic moments of the First World War, as the German Spring Offensive surged through the Aisne region following the opening attacks of 27 May 1918, bringing the conflict once more alarmingly close to Paris.

Although unhallmarked, the ring's construction, engraving style and inscription are entirely consistent with jewellery of the late 1910s. The finely executed foliate engraving and hand-applied millegrain decoration are characteristic of the period, reflecting the enduring taste for beautifully detailed workmanship even during years of extraordinary upheaval.

The unusual use of 11 carat gold is particularly intriguing. As France generally operated within a hallmarking tradition centred upon higher standards of gold, the alloy suggests a piece that may have fallen outside conventional production. During the final year of the First World War, jewellers and private individuals alike were adapting to shortages, economic pressures and disrupted supply chains. It is therefore conceivable that rings such as this were created from available gold sources, including the remaking of older jewellery into new sentimental pieces. While such an origin cannot be established with certainty, the inscription dated 29 Mai 18 records what was clearly a significant personal date, perhaps a wedding celebrated against the backdrop of a Europe still at war. The deeply personal nature of the inscription, together with the unusual yet handsome use of 11 carat gold, suggests a ring created to mark one of life's most important moments despite the uncertainties of the time.

Pleasantly weighty in the hand and beautifully detailed, this is a ring that lends itself equally well as a wedding band, commitment ring, or a celebration ring chosen to mark an important personal milestone, or simply as an elegant everyday ring for someone who appreciates antique craftsmanship and the stories such pieces quietly carry.

A handsome and evocative ring that combines practical wearability with the enduring appeal of finely executed hand engraving.
