Distinguished Antique Diamond & Gold Négligée Bow Pendant

This distinguished Edwardian-era diamond bow négligée necklace is a beautiful illustration of turn-of-the-century craftsmanship, displaying all the delicacy and luminosity one expects from the period. The necklace features a pair of delicate diamond-set pendants suspended from a central ribbon bow, a design whose name derives from négligée , meaning “carelessly elegant,” perfectly capturing the lightness and grace that defined turn-of-the-century jewellery design.
The silver chain (approximately 44cm from clasp to jump ring) carries a finely wrought pendant mount, crafted in silver with a backing of gold. In this period, before the introduction of the acetylene torch, jewellers were limited to lower temperatures. Hence, diamonds were often set into silver, so the cool white sheen complemented the brilliance of the stone and created a seamless field of reflective light. Gold backing was applied to silver to protect both skin and clothes. Close inspection of this piece reveals there is a visible thickness of gold to the rear of the negligee when viewed from the side of each pendant, consistent with superior late Victorian and early Edwardian craftsmanship.
A true négligée lavallière is defined by two asymmetrical drops suspended from a central motif, often a bow or knot, with each drop typically ending in a stone or pearl. These pendants were designed to sway gently with movement, scattering light and drawing the eye down the neckline — sensual, feminine, and achingly romantic. The present example exudes that same spirit, each diamond catching the light as though floating upon a silvery mist.
