A captivating study in light and form, this 14 carat gold opal doublet pendant is a piece that quietly commands attention.

Designed in an elegant asymmetrical teardrop, the pendant evokes the image of a glistening droplet suspended in time—fluid, organic, and effortlessly refined. Crafted in 14ct yellow gold and stamped accordingly (14K and 585), it features an open-backed gallery and a thoughtfully integrated tapered bail, lending the piece a light, sculptural quality.

At its centre rests a near-oval cabochon-cut opal doublet, measuring approximately 12.55mm x 7.31mm x 2.65mm. The opal displays vibrant flashes of blue, green, and warm orange, shifting beautifully with movement. As a doublet, the opal comprises a fine slice of precious opal bonded to a natural ironstone backing—this backing enhances the depth and intensity of colour, giving the stone a richer, more dramatic appearance than many solid opals of comparable size.

Secured with a combination of partial bezel and claw setting, the design allows maximum visibility of the opal’s surface, showcasing its lively play-of-colour to full effect.

The pendant measures approximately 24.53mm in length and 10.28mm in width and is suspended from a classic 9ct gold cable link chain measuring approximately 51cm—an ideal, wearable length.

Opal doublets offer a compelling balance of beauty and value, allowing for striking visual presence at a more accessible price point, while the ironstone backing provides additional stability for everyday wear.

This piece has been independently assessed by an independent registered master valuer and gemmologist, with a replacement valuation of $2,000, offering both confidence and reassurance in its quality and craftsmanship.

A graceful and distinctive piece, perfect for those who appreciate individuality, natural colour, and the quietly mesmerising allure of opal.

  • The dark backing beneath this opal is natural ironstone—a dense, iron-rich sedimentary rock formed over millions of years. In nature, precious opal often forms in thin seams within these ironstone boulders. By bonding a fine slice of opal to an ironstone base, doublets honour this geological partnership while enhancing the stone’s colour: the dark backdrop intensifies the opal’s play-of-colour, making blues, greens, and oranges appear richer and more vivid.

Ironstone also adds durability, protecting the more delicate opal layer and making doublets ideal for everyday wear. And because they make beautiful use of thinner opal seams that might otherwise go unused, doublets offer exceptional value—allowing you to enjoy a larger, more striking stone without the price tag of a solid opal of comparable size.
